Ravello, perched high on the cliffs above Amalfi, is famous for its views and its gardens. The town was once part of the Republic of Amalfi; now it is a peaceful historic village popular with tourists and honeymooners. The principal Ravello tourist attractions are the two famous gardens, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. Both of these panoramic gardens are open to the public, and you can wander through the tropical plants and enjoy fabulous views of the coastline. Ravello also has an impressive cathedral, the venerable Duomo, dedicated to San Pantaleone whose blood is a treasured relic. Perugia Perugia is a very ancient town, which rose to power during the time of the Etruscans. It was controlled by the Romans and invaded by the barbarians after the fall of the Roman Empire. In the 11th century a Free Commune was set up, reaching great power and splendor in the 13th and 14th century. After an obscure period of internal fighting, in 1540 it was conquered by Paolo III Farnese and remained under the dominion of the Church until 1860, when it became a member of the Italian State. Today Perugia is a splendid city of art, the capital of the region of Umbria and the residence of a famous university. It has a very lively center, rich in beautiful buildings and monuments, where countless artistic and cultural events take place. Viareggio The area along the coast called Versillia is a perfect vacation spot for people who enjoy the beach and seeing nearby attractions. Viereggio is the largest town in this area and is an old seaside resort and boating center. It is located only an hour away from the Italian Riveria and from other little fishing villages. The area is full of antique and cultural history. The wonderful walled city of Lucca is nearby, and the entire area is near Florence. Another favorite spot along the shore is the elegant town of Forte Dei Marmi where the rich come in the summer. There is a beach, and the little town is full of wonderful elegant shopping. The beach area is close to the marble mountains and the town of Pietrasanta where Michaelangelo went to find marble in nearby quarries. Visit Carara and the wonderful mountain quarries where marble is mined and sent to all over the world. Orvieto Orvieto is situated on the valley of the Paglia river. It was an important Etruscan centre with the name of "Volsinii Veters". The Etruscans established there also a sacred place for all people of their region Etruria called "Fanum Volumnae". In Roman times it was a prosperous centre for its production of ceramics. It was also dominated by several invasions. In XI-XII century Orvieto became a free common with wonderful buildings like towers, palaces and noble houses. In 1354 it became a city of the Church Estate until 1798. After a brief Napoleonic domination, it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. |
