Centuries ago, water once covered the vast Sunriver area. The meadow became gathering place for Native Americans living in the region and later, for trappers, settlers and explorers, including John Fremont and Kit Carson, who led expeditions along the banks of the Deschutes River. It was World War II that really triggered the beginning of the modern-day Sunriver.
